The Black & White of Fifty Shades of Grey

As Valentine’s Day approaches, many women will flock to their local theater to see Fifty Shades Darker, the sequel to the widely popular film and erotic book series Fifty Shades of Grey. There is a significant irony about linking a holiday about love and romance with a film that glorifies the use of BDSM (bondage, dominance, sadism, masochism) through manipulation and coercion in a relationship.

While the Fifty Shades of Grey series is often categorized as a romance, it actually normalizes a very serious issue in today’s culture: sexual violence against women. Just like in mainstream pornography, the Fifty Shades…

Running the Race for Gold

With the Olympics on our televisions every night, there’s been a lot of talk about several athletes breaking records for the number of medals being won by an athlete in a single Olympic games. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps now has 28 medals over the course of four Olympics, of which 23 are gold. 23 gold medals! I read recently that if Michael Phelps were his own country, he would rank 59th as the most decorated country since the first summer Olympics held in 1898.

As for me, I have often said that if dropping my phone without it breaking were…

Christian Grey Belongs in Jail, Not in Your Bedroom

I wasn’t going to write a blog post about the new Fifty Shades of Grey movie trailer because literally (and that “literally” is not exaggerated) everyone else has and we’ve already discussed the craze here and here. However, after actually viewing the trailer yesterday, I can’t get the following thought out of my mind:

“Christian Grey belongs in jail. Not in your bedroom.”

Okay, so JAIL may be putting it strongly, but I don’t think I am too far off.

Perhaps it is because I was once the young, mousey girl taken advantage of by an…

Some Sort of Catchy Title to Get Your Attention…

So it would seem that I am sticking my toes back into the waters of blogging. I am no stranger to this land, but it’s been a long time.

For those who don’t know and that’s probably most of you—for seven years straight back in the early-mid 2000s, I blogged on Xanga, Typepad and eventually WordPress, running my own little piece of internet real estate, as I masqueraded around as PinkHairedGirl.

In early 2010, I said goodbye to not only my pink locks, but also to blogging.

Why? I felt as if I had lost my identity in the pseudonym and took a step back to work…

Since Everyone Else is Talking About Anthony Wiener

People say he’s a pervert. People say he’s a bad husband. But Anthony Wiener is not that special. He just happens to be in a position where his indiscretions are plastered across news headlines.

The reality is we’re all just one poor decision away from the same fate.

In this day and age where it’s becoming increasingly more popular (ie. cool, funny) to nonchalantly send private material to boyfriends, friends and even strangers (otherwise known as sexting), there’s something we can all learn from the likes of Anthony Wiener:

What you believe you’re sharing privately probably won’t stay…

What if We’re Single on Purpose?

The following post is adapted from some notes of a message I gave last year on singleness. And shocker… I am actually single and not a married woman sharing about how hard it is to be single and how sorry I am that you’re still single. Yeah, I’ve read those posts and heard those messages too. Lately, you, the single woman like me, have been on my heart. Perhaps it’s the holidays. Perhaps it’s because I am inching closer to 30. I don’t know. I just thought it was time to share this post. I am not saying this…

Fifty Shades: Not Your Mother’s Romance Novel

I’ve been asked by several people if I would please address the #1 New York Times bestselling erotic fiction, Fifty Shades of Grey and it’s series of counterparts.

As someone who has not read it and as someone who has no plans to read it, it’s difficult for me to denounce an entire series of books without anything more than the understanding that it’s a sexually graphic fictional novel.

But that’s actually enough for me.

As we know here at Dirty Girls Ministries, erotic fiction or…
